A tempest in Tea Party over Staten Island Rep. Grimm

by Tom Wrobleski, SILive.com  |  published on February 20, 2013

There’s one thing the bickering borough Tea Party factions agree on: They are no longer enamored of Rep. Michael Grimm (R-Staten Island/Brooklyn).

And that could be a concern with national and local Democrats already sizing Grimm up for 2014.

In announcing the formation of the new Richmond County Tea Party Patriots, group organizers faulted Grimm for saying that in the wake of the Newtown school massacre, he would support a new assault weapons ban.

The group plans to hold a Second Amendment protest outside Grimm’s office on Saturday.

And in a recent e-mail that also hit back at the Patriots group, the Staten Island Tea Party (SITP), led by co-founders Frank Santarpia and Lorraine Scanni, said Grimm’s “voting record didn’t match the conservative rhetoric that led to our support in his first race.”

The Tea Party was dissatisfied with Grimm’s support of raising the debt ceiling, as well as his support of an assault weapons ban.

The Tea Party had also slammed Grimm for his early backing of GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney, never a favorite of the Republican conservative wing.
