PROVIDENCE – Hundreds of gun owners rallied at the Rhode Island State House on Wednesday to protest gun control proposals prompted by the Newtown, Conn., school massacre.

The most significant piece of legislation would ban the sale or possession of assault weapons or high-capacity ammunition magazines after July 1.

The House Judiciary Committee plans to review that measure and other suggested gun law changes Wednesday evening.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee and legislative leaders crafted the bills following last year’s Newtown school shooting, which left six educators and 20 students dead.
