Gun rights supporters rally on Capitol steps

Three times in his life, Scott Nordstrom said, carrying a concealed a gun has saved his life, or at least warded off an imminent attack.

Once was in the “Emerald Triangle,” a region of California known for growing marijuana. Another time it was three bikers trying to run him down. Another time, a would-be mugger on the streets of San Francisco.

“The wealth distributor decided to leave,” Nordstrom said to a group of about 60 people including a few small children rallying for gun rights outside the state Capitol Friday morning.

More locally, he said, he frightened off a charging dog in the Scratchgravel Hills with gunshots.

The group carried signs such as “Stop school violence, arm teachers,” and “Gun-free zones kill kids,” and offered literature from the National Rifle Association, the John Birch Society and the “identitarian” movement, which addresses what Nordstrom called the root causes of mass shootings including the weakening of American language, culture and borders.

The group packed no visible firearms; Nordstrom said the group abided by the prohibition against guns on Capitol grounds, although he believes it violated state laws.
