Pelosi pledges to serve no more than four years as speaker

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., reached a deal with insurgent Democratic lawmakers to limit her time as the top leader to just one more term, unless she gets the support of two-thirds of the Democratic caucus.

Pelosi, 78, said the deal would impose a three-term limit on her own tenure and all senior leadership posts. The proposal would be retroactive, which means her two terms as Speaker from 2007 to 2011 count.

She announced the deal after incoming freshmen and more recently-announced lawmakers said they would oppose her, but a top aide to Pelosi said she did not need to agree to the deal to secure the 218 votes needed to win the gavel on Jan. 3. The proposal will get a vote from the full Democratic caucus in February, she said.

“Over the summer, I made it clear that I see myself as a bridge to the next generation of leaders, a recognition of my continuing responsibility to mentor and advance new Members into positions of power and responsibility in the House Democratic Caucus,” Pelosi said in a statement.
