U.S. Sen. Tom Udall says he is not running for a third term

It was news a lot of New Mexicans didn’t expect. U.S. Sen. Tom Udall says he’s not going to run for a third term. Udall made it clear he is not retiring though.

Udall said he will continue to serve the state and country.

KOAT political expert Brian Sanderoff says if a Democrat wins the next presidential election, Udall would be a likely pick for a cabinet position.

He said he didn’t think Udall was setting his sights on running for president. When asked about a possible run as vice president, Sanderoff said, “VP you never know. A lot would depend on who the presidential nominee is for the Democratic party. I think they’ll be looking for balance, gender wise, racial wise, we’ll just have to wait and see,” Sanderoff said.

A spokesperson for Udall said he didn’t want to comment on Udall’s political future.
